Recovery objectives in plain language
Recovery time objective describes the target time to restore an agreed service. Recovery point objective describes the target amount of data loss measured in time. They are planning requirements to agree with the business and validate with technical evidence.

What are RTO and RPO?
Apply the answer to your business
The time a team can tolerate without email may differ from the time it can tolerate without a scheduling or finance system. Set priorities by workflow, then ask the provider whether the proposed arrangements support them.
This is an illustrative situation, not a reported CX client engagement.
Turn the question into a next action
Choose the business decision you need, involve the person responsible for the system and record what is known versus what needs validation. Keep the follow-up small enough that it has a named owner and a clear finish line.
- Ask your teamWhich workflows must resume first?
- Ask your teamHow much re-entry of lost work is tolerable?
- Ask your teamWhat evidence supports the proposed targets?
Evidence to bring to the conversation.
Use the agreed scope to decide which records are relevant. These items can help the business and technical owners establish a common starting point:
- Prioritized business workflows
- Documented recovery requirements
- Provider capability and test evidence
Missing evidence is an open question to document. It is not a reason to invent an answer or assume that the underlying system is protected.
Know the boundary
An objective is not a guaranteed recovery promise. CX does not publish a recovery-time commitment without a separately agreed scope.
