How can a consulting team organize security responsibilities?

Apply the answer to your business

A consultant may work in a client’s environment as well as the firm’s own workspace. Those settings can have different approval, retention and reporting responsibilities that need explicit agreement.

This is an illustrative situation, not a reported CX client engagement.

Turn the question into a next action

Choose the business decision you need, involve the person responsible for the system and record what is known versus what needs validation. Keep the follow-up small enough that it has a named owner and a clear finish line.

  • Ask your teamWho approves access in each party’s environment?
  • Ask your teamHow are project-end sharing and accounts reviewed?
  • Ask your teamWhich reporting route applies to a suspected issue?

Evidence to bring to the conversation.

Use the agreed scope to decide which records are relevant. These items can help the business and technical owners establish a common starting point:

  • A collaboration and system map
  • Project access owners
  • Client and provider responsibility notes

Missing evidence is an open question to document. It is not a reason to invent an answer or assume that the underlying system is protected.

Know the boundary

Do not assume that a client permits third-party review of its environment. Authorization and information-handling terms must be settled before evidence is shared.
