Cybersecurity questions for accounting firms

Start with how staff and external collaborators access tax, financial and client-work systems. Review responsibility for sign-in controls, file exchange, departing-user access and recovery during important work periods.

What should an accounting practice discuss with its IT provider?

Apply the answer to your business

A seasonal collaborator may need access for a short engagement. The practice should know who approves that access, how it is reviewed and how it ends when the assignment is complete.

This is an illustrative situation, not a reported CX client engagement.

Turn the question into a next action

Choose the business decision you need, involve the person responsible for the system and record what is known versus what needs validation. Keep the follow-up small enough that it has a named owner and a clear finish line.

  • Ask your teamWhich applications and file exchanges are in the review?
  • Ask your teamWho owns seasonal and contractor access?
  • Ask your teamWhat is the recovery plan for a critical work deadline?

Evidence to bring to the conversation.

Use the agreed scope to decide which records are relevant. These items can help the business and technical owners establish a common starting point:

  • An application and collaborator list
  • Account approval and departure records
  • Available coverage and restore evidence

Missing evidence is an open question to document. It is not a reason to invent an answer or assume that the underlying system is protected.

Know the boundary

Industry obligations require qualified review of the actual facts and requirements. CX does not promise regulatory compliance or insurance eligibility through this guide.
